| Setting up the Activity in
your classroom: |
Scholastic News Online offers opportunities for independent
work, collaborative group work, and whole class instruction.
You can decide which approach will work best for you based
on the grade level and maturity level of your class. Other
considerations include the number of computers available for
use and your instructional goals.
If a computer is available for each student, write the URL
for Scholastic News Online (http://scholastic.com/news)
on the board and have students enter it.
If you are working in a computer lab, log the computers on
to Scholastic News Online before students come to class. If
there are not enough computers for the whole class, group
the students by reading level. Assign each student a role
so that the online tasks are distributed. One student can
be the "driver" who navigates the Web. Another can
be the timekeeper who keeps the group on task. A third can
be the group's note-taker. If there are more than three students
per computer, you can add other roles, such as team leader,
team reporter, etc.
If you are working with a computer learning station within
your classroom, divide students into small groups and provide
time for each group to explore Scholastic News Online. While
one group is reading the online articles, others can be working
on the printed activities, writing in current events journals,
or conducting news-related discussions.
Optional: Include a wall map of the United States and the
world so students can locate the setting of different events.
