Isabelle Hardenbergh was a black slave who was born before July 4,in the year either 1797 or 1798. It's not known what year she was born in. She was sold to a man, and his last name became her first name, which was Sojourner. She was the only child. The man lived in New York, so she had to move to New York. A few years later there became a law that who ever was born after July 4,1799 would be free, but Sojourenen was born befor July 4, 1799. Soon, she got sick of being a slave and ran with courage. She left, and then she made it!!! Sojourner died at Battle Creek in 1883.
