Maria Mitchell was a great woman. She taught young women to go for their dreams. She was raised in Nantucket, Massachutses. She always was interested in astronomy. She proved this in 1847 when she discovered the comet Mitchell. For this amazing discovery Maria recieved five awards, and was recomended to many people and places including Vassar. From 1865 to 1888, Maria was the first woman on the faculty at Vassar. Of course she taught astronomy but not many females took it because many took mathimatics. She wanted women to follow their own paths so she didn't mind. Sadly a year after retiring from Vassar Maria died June,28,1889. Even though she is dead we still honor Maria Mitchell today.
