Keep Earth Alive!!

By Afsana R.
India, Age 15

Our world is a beautiful planet. God gave us this earth thinking that human beings would actually take care of it and preserve it till the end of time. We may have gotten this earth. But it is not owned by us. It is merely a lodge where we are resting till the time comes for us to leave. Many factors influence global warming. Under global warming, come several other factors such as air pollution, water pollution, wastage of our resources and simply, carelessness. There is no one to blame but ourselves.
The colour green has a whole new meaning. Earth full of trees makes the whole planet look beautiful and rich. Trees not only look good but they actually help the environment. Some of the important functions of trees which we clearly forget are…giving us oxygen. Just compare the life on a desert versus a forest full of trees. Quite frankly we will not be able to do so in a few years because of the felling of trees. No trees, means removal of top soil and minerals thus leading to desertification.
The trees also get rid of carbon dioxide. No trees would automatically mean pollution. We humans are bent upon cutting down our lovely forests for making houses and agricultural land. If this carries on we will not need a house to live in because we would all have been deprived of oxygen.
The climate is obviously affected. After interviewing a lady who had been living in Chandigarh for more than thirty years, I came to know that the climate had changed drastically. It would never be so hot and would have a moderate climate throughout the year. This year, the monsoons also came late, which means less water. The weather is as such that one part of the country is suffering from drought and famine while the other is suffering from floods.
It is high time that we realize our duties as members of this earth. The late King of Pop, Michael Jackson rightly said, “We are the world, we are the children, we are the ones who make a brighter day so let's start giving. There's a choice we're making, we're saving our own lives. It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me.”
We all need to protect and conserve the environment. Each and every one of us can make a difference. So let us all hug a tree and pledge to protect at least one.
