Green Power!

By Kristina S.
Ohio, Age 12

GREENHOUSE EFFECT: the rise in temperature the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (EXAMPLES: Water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane) trap energy from the sun.

Average global temperature has been increased by nearly one degree Fahrenheit over the past century; scientists expect the average of the global temperature to increase an additional two degrees to six degrees Fahrenheit in the next one hundred years! I know this does not sound like a big deal to you, but it could change the Earths climate as never before.

But, caused my gasoline and methane in the world, billions of people across the globe all pollute the air in many more ways then drive your car. Yes, you probably think that this isnt a big deal but it very much so is! In Antarctica and the cold Arctic, the ice and glaciers are melting, causing thousands of animal species to become endangered, or even to the point of extinction. Polar bears are nearly extinct due to the global warming and we must save them and many others before they die out. Dont pollute the air as much such as carpooling or riding your bike to places closer to home. Those are two out of many ways to reduce global warming.

Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling is very important, too. Did you know that seventy-five percent of each tree that is cut down for paper is not used in a paper product, or paper made from recycled paper uses seventy-percent less energy? Its true! By recycling your paper people can make more paper and other useful products. If you throw away your papers in the garbage can, it just creates less room in the Garbage Fills, and they do not decompose for several years. If you do not have a recycling bin in your classrooms, talk to your principal in getting some, it could save thousands of trees! And not only paper, you can recycle glass, metals, and plastic!

Glass can be recycled virtually forever; it never wears out!

For every 2,000 pounds of glass that is recycled actually saves more than 2,000 pounds of other resources such as 1, 330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of pounds of feldspar.

Americans use 4 million plastic bottles every hour, but sadly only 25% of those bottles are actually recycled.

Every Sunday 500,000 trees could be saved if everyone recycled their newspapers!

So, if you want to save the Earth like me, then follow these tips: (dont forget: tell your friends to do this, too!)
~ Turn off the lights, computer, and TV (or any other electronic) when you are not using them to conserve energy.
~ Always recycle your papers, plastics, metals, and glass; if you do not know what to recycle, talk to your parents and ask to see if they know.
~ Carpool to activities, parties, gatherings, events, ect., to reduce air pollution.
~ Dont litter. Throw old, leftover food (bread, leftover cold lunches, ect.) that you do not eat into your backyard, it and decompose or birds can eat them!
~ Talk to a local environmentalist for details on how you can save our amazing Earth.
