The Diet of a Northern Flying Squirrel

By Amanya, Amreen B.
North Carolina, Age 11

To live and not starve, the Northern hemisphere flying squirrels eat fungi, lichens, mushrooms, hardwood mast, tree sap, insects, carrion, buds, flowers, bird seeds, bird eggs, and nestlings. In the spring after hibernation, they chew their food, then swallow, but they don't swallow whole. These flying squirrels are amnivores.
