Summit: 29,028 feet above sea level
At 6:30 a.m., after spending two hours thawing out Hillary's frozen boots, the men finally strap on their crampons and set off for the top. Faced with a 40-foot vertical snow cliff, Hillary and Norgay use every bit of energy to work their way up. Hour after hour, using ice picks, they cut endless ice steps, pulling themselves over ridge after ridge, until finally — there is no more mountain to climb. At 11:30 a.m., Hillary and Norgay step onto the summit of Everest! Hillary takes a photo as Norgay plants on an ice axe the flags of the United Nations, Nepal, Great Britain, and India. Congratulations! You've made it to the top of the world. How does it feel? Check out the interview with Hillary to see how he felt.

What countries can Hillary and Norgay see from the top of Mt. Everest? Need help? Check out the map of the Himalayan region.

Activity Pack Mt. Everest may be the world's tallest mountain, but where are some of the other World's Famous Mountains? When were they first climbed? Try to find these mountains on a map or globe.

Did you know that after months of preparation and trekking, Hillary and Norgay stayed on the summit for just 15 minutes? Why do you think they stayed on the summit for only 15 minutes? How do you think Hillary's life changed once he came back down from the summit? Check the interview with Hillary!

Sir Edmund once said, "It is not the mountain we conquer, it is ourselves. If you can overcome your fear, you are frequently able to extend yourself far beyond what you normally regard as your ability." Have you ever been scared of something? How did you overcome your fear?

Crampon- metal frame with spikes worn on hiking boots for ice climbs.

Ice Pick- (also called ice axe) a tool for chopping ice or securing oneself while climbing over ice.
