At home, African Americans were leaving the southern states in large numbers to find better opportunities in northern cities like Chicago and Detroit. Meanwhile, millions of immigrants were coming into the United States hoping to make their lives better too. Women were trying to make their lives better by fighting for their right to vote, and the country found itself in the First World War — a war that covered the world with tragic consequences.
