A Conversation with the Illustrator

Ana Juan
Frida got her freedom by painting. This is the reason I chose to depict her surrounded by flying birds; I also wanted to paint her eyebrows, one of the most remarkable characteristics of her face, as a swallow. Here, birds are a symbol of the freedom that Frida dreamed of. She could only get this dream by using her imagination. The roses stand for beauty and pain, both of which filled the life of Frida Kahlo.
