Netscape 2.02 on the PC

Suggestion: Print this page so you can follow the instructions while fixing your settings.

If you are having difficulty playing sounds with Netscape 2.02, we recommend that you upgrade to Netscape Navigator 3.0 or higher. If you choose not to upgrade, you can download a small "helper application" from our site that will play sounds in your browser.

Upgrading your Browser

Netscape offers several versions of their browser, depending on your computer configuration. We suggest that you upgrade to the latest browser available; however, if you have an older computer, you may want to use earlier versions due to processor speed and memory limitations. Below are the general requirements, but you should refer to the Netscape Web site for more details.

The minimum requirements for upgrading to Navigator 3.0 are:
Platform: Windows 3.1
Processor Minimum: 386SX
Minimum Memory: 4 MB
Recommended Memory: 8MB
Minimum Disk Space: 3 MB

Platform: Windows 95

Minimum Memory: 8 MB
Minimum Disk Space: 15 MB

Downloading a Sound Player

For playing .WAV file format sounds in Netscape 2.02, we recommend using the WPLANY ("Windows Play Any") application. It is a small, free "helper-application" that works with your browser to play sounds.

To download and install WPLANY.exe:

  • Click here to download WPLANY.exe (75 KB).
  • If your browser prompts you to Open File or Save it to Disk when you begin the download, we recommend that you choose Save it to Disk and save it to your desktop so you can retrieve it easily.
  • When the Save As window appears, select Desktop as your Save In: location.
  • Double-click on the WPLANY.exe file (on your desktop or wherever you have saved it).
  • A Zip Central window will open prompting you for a location to play the files. This is the Extract field.
  • Click the "..." button to the right of Extract to:, select C:/and click OK.
  • When the Zip Central window appears again, click Start.
  • You will see a small window indicating that the files have been moved successfully.
Choosing WPLANY

Now that you have installed WPLANY, you need to choose it as your preferred sound player for .WAV files.

To choose WPLANY:

  • Open Netscape and click Options from the toolbar.
  • Click General Preferences.
  • Click Helpers.
  • Scroll through the File Type window and select audio/wav and audio/x-wav.
  • Under Action:, select Launch the Application.
  • Click Browse to find the wplany.exe file located in C:/Program Files/wplany.
  • Click Open and click OK.
  • When you click the speaker icon, a small window may pop up on your screen. If you see this, be sure to close it when the narration concludes.
  • Due to the way Netscape 2.02 works, you may experience a delay while the files load.
