Sprint Reading Teaching Plan
Each four-page Teaching Plan contains the support you need to provide
students with direct reading instruction.
Summary
For each book, Teaching Plan provides a summary of plot and content.
Each Book summary is divided into three parts. Use these parts as reading
assignments for students.
Skills Chart
A convenient chart shows the targeted skills for each Teaching Plan.
ELL Support
Give English-language learners the additional instruction they need
to acquire English fluency. Activities in social and oral language,
as well as in idiomatic expressions, support students' reading. Culturally
appropriate activities and academic language activities help ELL students
gain access to unfamiliar text.
Build Background
Begin each plan by discussing a topic related to the book. Focus on
activating students' prior knowledge. Help students realize that the
more knowledge they bring to the text, the better they will be able
to construct meaning from it. The section ends with a purpose-setting
suggestion.
Develop Vocabulary
Introduce students to the vocabulary words from the reading selection.
Then teach the vocabulary strategy to help students recognize unfamiliar
words. The Student Workbook page for Vocabulary gives students practice
using the vocabulary words and the strategy. Explain to students that
recognizing these words will help them read and understand the book
more easily.
Build Phonemic Awareness
These short phonemic awareness routines provide students with practice
in manipulating individual sounds, or phonemes, within words.
Practice Phonics/Word Study
Introduce the phonics/word study strategy by using the activities in
the Teaching Plan. Each plan contains systematic and explicit instruction
in a phonics or word study strategy that will help students decode unfamiliar
words. Give students practice using the strategy on the student workbook
page. Note that phonics exemplar is included in the vocabulary list.
