State Teacher of the Year, Arkansas
The Arkansas 2001 Teacher of the Year is Marian "Faye" Fowler Haney, a second grade teacher at Valley View Elementary in Jonesboro. A 28-year veteran, she is active in National Science Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, and is currently the Arkansas Chair for the Society of Elementary Presidential Awardees. Faye has also been the recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, the Presidential Award for Elementary Science, Golden Ruler, Thanks to Teachers, and Entergy Awards. Following trips to China and Fulbright studies in Ghana, West Africa, and South Africa, she has developed curricula for those countries and offers them to the second grade classes at Valley View and to others through workshops and conferences. She also shares ideas as a freelance writer for Primary Mailbox magazine and as a presenter for NSTA. Besides teaching, Faye enjoys clogging, playing handbells, and volunteering at City Team Ministries and the ESL program at Arkansas State University.
