Harriet "Jo" Cornwell Biehle, 2001
State Teacher of the Year, Kentucky
Jo Biehle has been teaching third grade at Worthington School for 10 years and has 31 years of teaching experience. Ms. Biehle is an honorary Plank Owner of the USS Kentucky (SSBN 737), a recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Teacher Award, an Ashland Inc. Individual Achievement Award recipient, a Peabody Roundtable Honoree, and a member of the Distinguished Educator/Kentucky Highly Skilled Educator cadre. Her philosophy of teaching is based on the concept that each student receives an education that will prepare that person for a successful and rewarding lifestyle. Ms. Biehle stresses the basics while building upon the pupils' capabilities, and utilizes many instructional strategies, teaching techniques, and games to construct real-world relationships between the children and the subject matter. She believes the focus of education is that all students leave the classroom as satisfied, worthwhile, contributing "thinkers" who anticipate life with a positive perspective.
