Barbara M. Forshag, 2001
State Teacher of the Year, Louisiana
Barbara Forshag has been in the classroom for 22 years, but her family will tell you she was born a teacher. Growing up in a housing project in New Orleans, Barbara spent a lot of time playing school with her two brothers, one of them her twin. She loved school and frequently spent afternoons in the library. Books were her escape into a world of riverboats, mysteries, and faraway places. Now, Barbara helps middle school students to make those same escapes by modeling a love for books. In 1995, Mrs. Forshag was certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Early Adolescents English/Language Arts.
