September 2000

Most people begin their new years in January. I think that a teacher has a different calendar and lives life differently. September has always been the start of the new year for me. The apprehensions, the excitement, the challenges, all wage war within us as we hope for new and better beginnings.

This year has been no different. Although my classrooms have changed and my audiences are different, wherever I go the nuances of a new school year are in the air.

In Simsbury, Connecticut, everyone was excited at the prospect of a new school year. And as I watched the wonderful school superintendent, Dr. Joe Townsley, interact with his teachers and administrative staff, my own hopes were renewed. Teachers want to do good work, to be appreciated, and to be respected. All of these things I felt at the convocation at which I spoke.

Another interesting event on my "tour" this month was a stop at the University of Colorado at Boulder. One of my former students, Dr. Kevin Welner, arranged my trip to the university to present a speech to the community at large and four smaller presentations to graduate students of education and high school teachers and administrators. Again, the enthusiasm, the eagerness, the desire of students and teachers to be great educators were overwhelming.

The students and I were able to meet and talk at meals and throughout the days, and indeed, this is where I found that depth of passion and commitment that is so important to good teaching. And I was elated.

On all my other journeys this month, I found the same things to be true. September is the great beginning. If we could sustain this level of caring and enthusiasm throughout the school year we would be magnificent. And for me, it is all part of a great discovery. Or maybe it is simply a rediscovery. When one teaches anyone, anywhere, we receive and learn much more than we can ever give. And so we begin each year with new insights and new hopes. May your "new year" be filled with greatness.
