1920: British Mandate

When World War I ended in 1918, parts of the defeated nations were divided up among the victorious nations. These areas were called mandated territories. In 1920, Great Britain received control of Palestine, and promised to help Jews build a home there.

Palestine bordered Lebanon and Syria in the North and the Gulf of Aqaba in the south, and was separated from Transjordan (now Jordan) in the east by the Jordan River
