Meet Bah Abdul, 20, Sierra Leone
Bah Abdul is from Sierra Leone, but now lives on Staten Island in
New York City. He came to the U.S. seeking asylum from the turmoil in his
native country. He told about his turbulent life in Sierra Leone in
a story he wrote called "The Story of a Village Called Gold Master."
He presented an oral reading of the story at Creative Expressions:
Youth Against War, one of the events held during the week of the UN
Special Session on Children.
"The whole story is based on personal experiences," Abdul said. "I
was arrested and held as a prisoner for about a month by the Revolutionary
United Front (RUF). I've seen innocent people killed by the RUF. I've
seen people who were starving because there was nothing to eat or
because their parents were killed. I've lost my mom and my older brother,
killed by the RUF. I've lost many relatives and many friends during
the war."
Abdul hopes to return to Sierra Leone as a journalist. Although he
was not a delegate to the special session, he was involved in many
activities around the session.
