Lesson 3: Spotlight on 1965

Language arts goals: Use appropriate research methodology; use context to understand meaning.

Social studies goals: Understand culture as an integrated whole; construct reasoned judgments about cultural responses.

Time required: 40 minutes

Materials Needed: Spotlight on 1965 student reproducible, Why Say It? student resource, Possibilities of the Past and Interview for Understanding student reproducibles, pencil/pen.

Directions:
1. Distribute Spotlight on 1965 student reproducible. Separate the class into small groups and ask each group to select one event from the reproducible.

2. Have students research the impact of this event on 1960s society (children, teens, adults) and think about how it connects to the 21st century concept of the American dream.

3. Gather as a class and discuss each group's conclusions. Help students make connections between different events in 1965 and similar events that have occurred in the last ten years (1994-2004).

4. Now, discuss how literature, art, and poetry are often influenced by world events such as those on the timeline. Review the historical context of the quotes on Why Say It? student resource A.

5. Ask students to review their free-writing from Lesson 1 and compare their interpretation of the quotes to the author's original intent. Discuss the similarities and differences.

At Home: Expand this activity to the home by asking students to choose events from the timeline to discuss with their parent/guardian. Distribute Interview for Understanding student reproducible and ask students to include the results of their interview in an essay on the topic: How does your American dream compare to that of your parents?
