Goals:
To practice structuring and writing stories
Time required:
40 minutes
Materials required:
Convince Your
Audience (PDF) reproducible worksheet 4
Are You Convinced? (PDF) reproducible worksheet 1
pen or pencil
Directions:
1. Choose a well-known story, fable, or fairy tale. Read it aloud and ask your students to take note of the characters, setting, and theme.
2. Discuss how some stories can become more meaningful when they are told in a new way. For example, a comedic telling of a sad story can be a powerful way to relay a message. Give students ten minutes to rewrite the story in a new form; for example, as a song, poem, comic strip, music video, television show, or radio program, or from another character’s perspective.
3. Distribute worksheet 4. Complete steps 1–4 together. Then ask students to silently complete step 5.
Persuasive Wrap-Up:
Review the parts of a story and the different ways in which stories
can be told. Distribute the Are
You Convinced? (PDF) reproducible worksheet 1, and ask each student to critique his or her own storyboard. Discuss what was successful and what could be improved.
