Asking the Hardest Questions

Here’s a list of questions every comedian asks when revising a piece. Ask these questions of your piece and you won’t go wrong.

  • Does it use as few words as possible?
  • Does it telegraph its punchline?
  • Is the funniest part at the end?
  • Have you cut every nonessential phrase?
  • Does every word count?
  • Is it unnecessarily repetitive?
  • Does it have a good set-up?
  • Do the puns pop?
  • Are the jokes all funny?
  • Does it surprise the reader?
  • Does it have the right tone?
  • Does it hold the reader’s attention?
  • Is it entertaining?
  • Does it tell a good story?
  • Does it still make you laugh?
