Let parents know about Scholastic Read For 2006.
Scholastic Read For 2006 gets children excited about reading, and thinking about all the different cultures that are also participating in the event. Let parents know about the event so that they can share and build on their child's excitement at home.

  • Encourage children to select the book(s) of their choice to read on Scholastic Read For 2006 day.
  • Parents can help their children prepare for the big reading day by reading to or with them each and every day. It is never too late (or too early) to pick up a book and read.
  • Parents can enjoy reading along with their children on Scholastic Read For 2006 day. Parents can be great reading role models for their children.
  • Have students create questionnaires for parents and family members about their favorite childhood books and reading. Students may want to read these special books on December 2!

Invite parents to your Scholastic Read For 2006 celebration.
Here are some ways parents may want to participate in the classroom:

  • Have parents read aloud to the class, one-on-one with their child, with a small group, or silently with the rest of the class.
  • Invite parents to bring in their favorite childhood book to share and discuss.
  • If parents come from another country, ask them to share information about their native culture. Perhaps they can tell stories, bring food or music, dress in traditional costume, etc. Have them show your class their country on the Scholastic Read For 2006 World Map and check to see if any schools are participating from that country.
  • Invite parents from a variety of different careers or interests to join your class to Scholastic Read For 2006, and afterwards share why reading is important in their work.

Here are some ways parents may want to participate from home or work:

  • Parents can join their child on December 2nd by picking up a book and reading.
  • Encourage parents to read the same book as their child and they can discuss it later that night at the dinner table.
  • Scholastic Read For 2006 can be a perfect opportunity for children to stay up past their bedtime to read together or to have a family reading moment after dinner.
  • Parents can call or e-mail their child on Scholastic Read For 2006 day to wish them hapy reading and to talk about what books they are reading.
  • Parents can share their favorite childhood books with their children and maybe they will chose to read one of them.
  • Families should take time together everyday to read together for at least 20 minutes a day�reading is something that can be celebrated on any day at any time.

Many parents want to help out in the classroom but aren't sure how. Here are some things you may want to ask parents to help:

  • Provide food snacks and drinks.
  • Help create decorations and favors.
  • Help decorate the classroom.
  • Invite guest readers.
  • Raise money to purchase books for the class to read on the day of the event.
