PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION OF DIGITAL ADVERTISEMENT

SOFTWARE: Scholastic accepts current versions of Mac-based QuarkXPress files up to version 4.04. If you would like to submit pages produced in software different from this, please call Kathy DeVarie @ 212.343.4567.

We support vector art programs, Adobe Illustrator. If you are using any other programs to create art that will be imported into your page files, please notify Scholastic production.

FILE PAGE AD CONSTRUCTION: We prefer scifix FLYT files for full page advertisements. When supplying files in this manner, we require a continuous tone (CT); linework (LW) and final layout (FLYT) supplied on a JAZ or DLT tape.

If working with Mac-based files we prefer to have pages created as single, facing pages to their actual trim size with trim marks. When producing pages this way, all elements which bleed, must be extended an 1/8" to all four outer edges, or 9 points over the edge of the page. For example, if the trim size = 8" X 10 1/2", then by adding the bleed, the correct document size = 8 1/4" X 10 3/4".

Please name files using a maximum of 9 characters.

PARTIAL AD CONSTRUCTION: We prefer to have ads built to 100% of their actual trim size. If ads bleed on any side, that bleed area should be extended over the edge of the document by 1/8" or 9 points. If constructing partial ads and supplying them as QuarkXPress, EPS files, we suggest building your original Quark documents so the document size includes all applicable bleed areas.

SUPPLIED MEDIA: Mac-based digital information can be supplied on any of the following media:
* 3.5" Iomega ZIP disks - 100 Mb, 500 Mb
* 3.5" Iomega JAZ disks - 1 GB
* CD ROM

If supplying PC - based files, please check with Scholastic production as to how these files are best submitted.

PAGE FILE SUBMISSION: Supply all final pages and their corresponding art (EPS,TIFF) files that are used within the page files.

Avoid supplying vector art programs such as Aldus Freehand or Adobe Illustrator as final page files, instead save the final file as EPS and import that into a page layout program. If it is necessary to construct pages in an art program, this should be clearly noted.

If using QuarkXPress, we advise using the "collect for output" feature when preparing file for output. This assists in gathering corresponding art and image files needed for processing. The report file supplies helpful information about the supplied files.

Supply all final vector EPS files that are used within the page files and if using a version of Aldus Freehand under 4.0, also supply the corresponding original art document for each file.

Supply a list of ALL fonts used in the entire job (including any fonts used in any EPS files).

If supplying a PDF file please supply all native files.

LASER PROOF/HARD COPY SUBMISSION: Supply final color or black and white laser printouts at actual size (100%) with no correction noted. If a reduced-sized laser is provided, it should be clearly noted on the provided laser proofs. If possible, it is beneficial to output final printouts with "registration marks". This places crop marks on the edge of the files, and also prints the name of the file at the top of the page.

Note any special instructions directly on the provided laser proofs.

If supplying black and white proofs, mark all pages either 4/C, 3/C, 2/C or 1/C depending on how many plates will be required for each page. For example, when submitting a 2-color page with Magenta & Cyan mark 2/C, M+C.

Fifth and / or spot colors (actual PMS color) should be clearly indicated. Please note if PMS colors are to print as process matches or the actual PMS color.

FONT SUBMISSION: Furnish all fonts folded at one level. Be sure to include both the appropriate screen and printer fonts that are used in the page files. Avoid TruType fonts.

LaserWriter "city" fonts (i.e., New York, Geneva, Chicago, etc.) cannot be used in production. There are no matching printer fonts.

If any customized fonts are used in page files of EPS files, both the screen and printer fonts must be supplied.

PROOF APPROVAL: Please supply (2) agency-supplied proofs. Press quality agency-supplied proofs will always be followed. If a press quality proof is not supplied with the file an Iris or Approval will be pulled.

CUSTOMER CONTACT: Please provide a contact name, address and phone number with the ad material for return purposes.

Also please provide a disk Log Sheet with disks.
