Everything You Need to Host a Family Literacy Event!

Empower families to support their children’s literacy journey!

These research-based kits were created in partnership with Dr. Karen Mapp, a leading expert in the Family Engagement field. Scholastic Literacy Events kits provide you with easy-to-implement activities and strategies that allow you to read-aloud and model for your families. The flexible literacy-rich activities empower you to engage with families based upon their comfort level and abilities. These kits can be used to create a multi-activity onetime event or help you build relationships with your families throughout the year. In addition, the take home resources and books create literacy rich-environments and build home libraries.

3 event themes to choose from:

  • SPOTLIGHT ON READING
The Spotlight on Reading Kit helps families get excited about the importance of reading and demonstrates the key role that they play in supporting their children’s education.
  • READING & WRITING CONNECTION
Engage families in helping their children make the connection to writing while practicing essential writing skills at home.
  • SUMMER READING KIT
This kit helps bridge school-year classroom learning to summer learning. Teachers explore reading, writing, and project-based learning with families and model oral reading and comprehension strategies that families can use over the summer break.

Harvard Graduate School of Education

Dr. Karen Mapp is the leading family and community engagement expert with more than 20 years of experience. As the author of the USDOE Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships, she guides state and local efforts to help families, educators, and communities work together toward positive developmental outcomes for all students.

What's very exciting about the Literacy Events is that it takes all the components of the DOE framework, from the link to learning right down to the collaborative piece, and this is a tool that provides teachers with a way to actually operationalize the framework through an event and a workshop with families.
