Lesson 1: Sea Scenes: Synonyms and Antonyms
Objective: Understand and use synonyms and antonyms
Time Required: 20 minutes
Material Needed: Sea Scenes (PDF) student reproducible #1
Directions:
- Using simple examples, review the definition of a synonym [e.g.,
big & large; fast & quick] and an antonym [e.g.,
big & small; fast & slow]. Have students give other examples.
Explain that synonyms and antonyms are useful because they help to communicate
meaning, and using the same words over and over makes writing dull.
- Have students complete student reproducible 1, Sea Scenes (PDF) individually or in pairs. Review.
Extension Activity:
All of the synonyms and antonyms in this activity are adjectives. Challenge
students to create a story using as many of these adjectives as possible
in a one-paragraph story. Choose the stories that use the most adjectives
in a creative way and have the student authors read their stories aloud.
