Lesson 2: Why are Fish Smart? Multi-meaning Words and Homonyms
Objectives: Recognize multi-meaning words and homonyms; use context
to figure out meaning.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Material Needed: Why Are Fish Smart? (PDF) student reproducible #2
Directions:
- Give simple examples of multi-meaning words [e.g. bank, bat, feet]. Have students give other examples and list them on the board.
- Distribute student reproducible 2, Why Are Fish Smart? (PDF). Guide students through the example mouth. Individually or in pairs, have students complete the first half of the worksheet.
- Have students go to the second part of the worksheet. Give simple examples of homonyms [hair & hare; way & weigh]. Have students give other examples and list them on the board.
- Have students complete the homonym activity.
Extension Activity:
Have students write sentences using the homonyms they didn't use in the exercise.
