Step 1. Decide on a Topic

The world is waiting for you to explore it! By talking to lots of people and asking lots of questions, you can find ideas for news stories everywhere. With so much happening in the world, however, deciding on one topic can be the hardest part of writing. Thinking about the questions below will give you more of a focus:

  • Do you have the latest updates on your topic?
  • Does the topic affect many people?
  • Does it involve someone well known or important?
  • Does it focus on an area that's close to where you live or go to school?
  • Is the topic unusual, unexpected, or out of the ordinary?
  • Does the topic involve strong emotions, such as fear, sadness, or happiness?

Answering "yes" to one or more of these questions will help you pick a topic that's most interesting and important to readers today.

"The best way to learn about the world is to go out and see it for yourself! You don't have to bump into Egyptian curses, spooky ghosts, or lost treasure to find an exciting topic. Let curiosity be your guide and jot down your story ideas (or else you might forget them!). Ask plenty of questions, too, because one good source leads to another."
