Step 4: Get Help from Classmates

At this point you've probably spent many hours working on your first draft. Now you might find yourself asking a whole new set of questions.

  • How will people feel when they read your story?
  • Does it make sense?
  • Is it interesting and informative?
  • Are there spelling, punctuation and/or grammatical errors that you may have missed earlier?

These are all issues you must tackle before you publish your story.

To get a fresh perspective, share your article with a classmate. Choose a partner and tell him or her what you need help with. Read your story aloud or have your partner look it over silently. Listen carefully to his or her questions and suggestions. Then work on your next draft. You may need to repeat this step if you're still having problems.

"Don't feel discouraged if your story needs improvement. This happens to everyone, even the best writers. Writing can be a team effort. When you work together to write a good story, it shows you know how to set goals and reach them."
